Gnosis Targets Spring 2027 Ethereum Shift as EEZ Devnet Opens

TL;DR

  • Gnosis's November 4 announcement targets spring 2027 for Ethereum settlement.
  • Rollup X is a public test network, with the core protocol under independent audit.
  • Gnosis documentation still leaves the activation block unset and describes staged proving and composability.

MUMBAI, November 4, 2026

Gnosis said November 4 that it targets spring 2027 to move Gnosis Chain onto Ethereum settlement, alongside the launch of an Ethereum Economic Zone devnet, bringing a new timetable and live demonstrations to its planned network overhaul.

The announcement concerns two separate systems: Rollup X, a public test network demonstrated at Devcon in Mumbai, and the future conversion of the existing Gnosis Chain. Launching the former does not activate the latter or retire today’s validators.

Ether closed November 3 at $2,271.64, up 0.977%, after trading between $2,236.92 and $2,309.70, according to ChartExchange’s UTC historical table. Those completed-session figures provide a market backdrop, without establishing a trading response to the announcement.

In its November 4 statement, Gnosis said the transition would carry existing contracts, balances and addresses into Ethereum settlement through a hard fork. It also cautioned that Rollup X is not yet intended to hold significant value and that the core protocol is undergoing independent security audit.

Gnosis’s spring 2027 target follows the DAO vote

The new timetable follows the GnosisDAO vote covered in August. That vote authorized a strategic direction. Today’s announcement adds a seasonal delivery target and a public demonstration environment, rather than another approval of the same proposal.

The original GIP-153 proposal targeted genesis around December 2026 or January 2027, conditional on engineering dependencies. Its economic aim was to replace treasury-funded staking subsidies with revenue linked to network activity.

The proposal left the mechanism connecting xDAI fee revenue to GNO for a later governance decision. A possible fee share or buyback was a design option, not an approved distribution. The new spring target does not, by itself, settle those token economics.

There is also a documentation gap. The implementation timeline, last updated October 20, still labels mainnet activation as a future milestone and says the activation block will be published closer to genesis. The November blog gives a broader window, without specifying that block.

That distinction affects operators planning around the change. A seasonal target indicates direction; a published activation block determines when network software and operating procedures must switch.

Rollup X tests mainnet trades and quantum signatures

The demonstrations address a practical constraint of separate networks: accessing liquidity or permissions on another chain usually requires additional coordination. EEZ aims to let connected applications complete linked actions together, with the operation reverting if a required part fails.

According to Crypto.news’s account of the demonstrations, CoW Swap filled a rollup order using Ethereum mainnet liquidity and returned tokens within the same transaction. Safe demonstrated coordinated ownership changes across networks.

The third demonstration checked a Falcon post-quantum signature on the rollup before authorizing a mainnet transfer. The team reported a 91% reduction in mainnet gas consumption. That is a demonstration-specific comparison, not a measured 91% reduction in every user’s total transaction bill.

It also does not complete Ethereum’s broader quantum transition. Authenticating one transfer with a different signature scheme is narrower than replacing cryptography across accounts, validators and network data.

Earlier activity shows why implementation details remain relevant. In an October 6 investigation, Bitquery found eight successful mainnet-to-EEZ transactions in the system’s first day. All batches then relied on one signing key, and no zero-knowledge proof was checked at that stage.

Those observations describe an earlier implementation. They are not a fresh audit of November’s devnet, but they illustrate why a successful cross-chain demonstration and a mature trust model are separate questions.

GNO unlock and validator retirement await activation

The Gnosis transition FAQ says validators should keep running until activation. Staked GNO unlocks when the validator set retires; GNO continues as a governance token. The devnet announcement is not itself an unlock event.

For users, the FAQ says accounts and balances remain unchanged, connected wallets stay connected and xDai remains the gas token. Existing bridges keep operating. Transfers to rollups outside the EEZ would still require a bridge.

The network comparison sets limits on the initial production release. It describes calls from Gnosis EEZ into Ethereum first, with the reverse direction and nested calls following later. It also anticipates interim proving, likely based on trusted execution environments, before real-time zero-knowledge proofs.

That page, also dated October 20, says audit results will be published before activation. The newer blog’s statement that an audit is under way indicates work in progress, not publication of a completed security review.

The technical explanation says a composer prepares execution tables before local operations run. It notes that the two networks do not share one execution stack: consistency depends on proofs and node integration connecting them correctly. Faster access therefore needs validation of the full execution path.

Broader sentiment remained cautious. Alternative.me’s Bitcoin-focused index read 34, or Fear, versus 26 a day earlier when checked November 4. It does not measure Gnosis deployment readiness.

The next concrete checkpoints are testnet-fork results, published audits and a mainnet activation block. Until those arrive, spring 2027 remains Gnosis’s announced target, with the validator retirement, GNO unlock and production change still ahead.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will Gnosis Chain become an Ethereum L2?

Gnosis's November 4 announcement targets spring 2027. Its documentation has not set an activation block, so the seasonal target is not a finalized hard-fork schedule.

Do Gnosis users need to migrate their tokens?

The planned hard fork carries over accounts, balances and contracts. The transition FAQ says wallets stay connected and xDai remains the gas token.

What happens to staked GNO?

The documentation says staked GNO unlocks when the validator set retires at activation. GNO continues as a governance token; the devnet launch does not itself trigger that unlock.

Is Rollup X ready for substantial deposits?

No. Gnosis calls Rollup X a test network not yet intended to hold significant value and says the core protocol is under independent security audit.
