SKALE said compromised infrastructure run by validator-node providers led to an exploit of its IMA Bridge on August 27, draining ERC-20 assets held in the affected bridge infrastructure and prompting an immediate pause.

The network said it is still assessing the total value lost, tracing assets and working with affected parties and authorities on freezes and recovery. It had not disclosed a loss total, affected-wallet count, attacker identity, transaction list, technical root cause or bridge-restoration date as of August 30.

The incident was contained to IMA Bridge infrastructure associated with SKALE on Ethereum, according to the project’s security update. SKALE said its Base deployment, its applications and its infrastructure continue to operate normally, while SKL on Ethereum mainnet and staked SKL were not affected.

That boundary is important but narrow. A pause can stop additional bridge activity while investigators establish which assets, deposits and withdrawals were exposed; it does not establish a final loss figure or settle the status of an individual transfer.

Bitcoin traded near $78,185 when reviewed, up about 22.7% over 30 days, according to CoinGecko’s public market page. The broader market move is separate from SKALE’s bridge assessment and provides no evidence that a bridged ERC-20 asset is available or recoverable.

SKALE Says Validator Infrastructure Was Compromised

SKALE’s statement locates the incident in infrastructure used by validator-node providers, rather than claiming every SKALE chain or the SKL token had been compromised. The project said the attacker drained ERC-20 assets held inside the affected IMA Bridge infrastructure after the compromise.

That is a significant distinction in a multichain system. The SKALE Network code repository describes IMA as the protocol’s interchain messaging and bridging layer, designed to move assets and messages among SKALE chains and Ethereum. A problem in that layer can affect the assets routed through it without proving that all independent SKALE deployments have the same exposure.

SKALE said SKALE on Base was not affected because it runs on separate infrastructure and architecture. The project also said the bridge incident did not affect SKL on Ethereum mainnet or staked SKL. Those statements are project disclosures, not a replacement for checking the exact chain, bridge route and asset involved in a particular user position.

The initial notice confirms that ERC-20 assets were drained, but it deliberately does not put a number on the drain. The dedicated loss-impact check found no verified on-chain total, victim count, wallet inventory, recovery amount or independent analytics estimate published alongside the project’s update. A credible later estimate should identify its wallet set and valuation time rather than treating every asset ever routed through IMA as lost.

IMA Bridge Pause Leaves Key User Questions Open

The bridge was paused when the incident was discovered, SKALE said. That stops normal IMA activity, but a pause is not the same as a conclusion that assets are frozen, returned or fully protected.

The project’s IMA Bridge whitepaper explains that bridge transfers involve a request between Ethereum and a SKALE chain through IMA agents and token-management components. In practical terms, users with a pending bridge transfer need an official service-status update to know whether it completed, remains pending, needs a manual process or is subject to a recovery review.

The immediate need for source-specific evidence mirrors the uncertainty after the Moonwell Base borrowing exploit, where a protective restriction came before a final loss reconciliation. The attack mechanisms differ, but both cases show why an emergency action should not be read as a completed user-impact assessment.

SKALE said it is working to freeze and recover stolen assets, determine the attack vector, trace funds, review affected bridge infrastructure and apply security measures before functionality returns. It did not state that any address had already been frozen, that assets had been recovered or that all transfers would resume on a fixed date.

SKALE on Base Continues as Investigation Proceeds

The project said applications and infrastructure on SKALE on Base continue to operate normally. That isolates the reported incident from an ecosystem-wide outage, but it does not turn the Ethereum-connected IMA deployment back on or answer the outstanding balance-sheet questions.

For users, the useful next disclosure is a precise affected-asset and wallet report: which contracts were drained, which bridge directions were exposed, the valuation method, whether any funds have been frozen, and how deposits, withdrawals and pending messages will be handled. Until then, claims of a final loss or a guaranteed recovery go beyond the public record.

SKALE’s official documentation repository identifies its network as a collection of independent chains anchored to Ethereum and Base. That architecture helps explain the project’s claim of containment, but it does not remove the operational importance of the compromised validator infrastructure for the Ethereum IMA route.
