Solana Sets Aug. 17 Start for 90% Rent Cut, Faster Slots

Solana’s tentative Agave 4.2 rollout is set to begin mainnet feature activations Aug. 17, bringing a phased 90% cut in refundable account-storage deposits, a larger transaction format and slot times targeted at 200 milliseconds, as SOL closed at $71.89 on Aug. 1.

The next Anza validator-client release does not change SOL’s supply or introduce a new token. It changes the cost of creating onchain state, the maximum size of an opt-in transaction and the pace at which the network produces slots, subject to the staged rollout and feature gates described by Solana.

CoinGecko’s historical data put SOL’s Aug. 1 market capitalization at about $42.25 billion and its rolling 24-hour volume at $1.56 billion. The closing price was up 3.4% from $69.54 on July 1, a month that included the network’s separate expansion to 100 million compute-unit blocks.

In its Agave 4.2 overview, the Solana Foundation says the release carries three feature-gated upgrades: reduced rent, 4,096-byte transactions and lower slot times. Its central caution is just as important: the new Alpenglow consensus protocol is in the codebase for testing, but will not activate on mainnet through 4.2.

The planned changes arrive as Solana-based products seek lower-friction ways to add users and settle transactions. That makes account-creation deposits relevant beyond validator operations, but the date is not final and none of the three changes independently promises lower trading fees or faster execution for every application.

Solana Agave 4.2 targets Aug. 17 feature activations

The release schedule, edited July 31, calls for volunteers representing 25% of mainnet stake to move to v4.2 on Aug. 3. It then targets general adoption on Aug. 10 and the start of feature activations a week later.

Anza labels that timeline tentative and tells operators to wait for Discord announcements before upgrading or downgrading. That means Aug. 17 is a planning target, not a guaranteed protocol deadline. The schedule records that the mainnet upgrade candidate was tagged July 24 and that the first 10% stake volunteer step began July 27.

The sequencing is designed to give validators and infrastructure providers time to test a new client before functions are turned on across the network. Unlike a hard fork with a fixed block-height deadline, the features are controlled through separate gates, allowing the network to monitor each change.

Agave is Anza’s validator client, so its rollout is primarily an operational event for validators, RPC providers, indexers and application teams. The Foundation lists no breaking change for 4.2, but it says indexers that decode raw transaction bytes must recognize the new v1 layout if applications use the larger transaction format.

The release also follows Solana’s push to accommodate workloads that need dependable blockspace. Daily Crypto Briefs recently covered the July capacity expansion, while the KSNET payment trial illustrates the different challenge of making a payment rail practical for merchants and users. Neither development establishes adoption of 4.2, but both make the cost and latency of onchain interactions more material.

90% rent reduction cuts SOL account deposits

Solana calls the charge commonly known as rent a refundable deposit rather than a fee. An account must hold enough lamports to cover the state it occupies on validators, and the balance is returned when the account is closed. The proposed Reduced Rent upgrade lowers the lamports_per_byte constant from 6,960 to 696.

The reduction will not arrive as a single switch. Under SIMD-0437, five independent gates step the level down by 9%, 27%, 63%, 81% and then 90%. Solana says a sixth fallback gate can restore the current 6,960 value if state growth produces unexpected problems.

The Foundation’s example is a business opening one million standard SPL token accounts. At its stated assumptions, the upfront deposits fall from about $159,000 to $15,900 after all five gates activate, because the per-account deposit drops from about $0.159 to $0.0159. The balance remains refundable, but a lower initial requirement can change how a wallet, payment company or application chooses to subsidize account creation.

That is a different lever from a network fee cut. It does not eliminate transaction fees, nor does it guarantee that every developer will pass the saving to a user. The Foundation says developers chose a phased rollout because lower deposits could encourage more onchain state, adding a capacity question that will be assessed between activation steps.

200ms slots and larger transactions await validator rollout

Agave 4.2 also raises the maximum transaction size from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes through a new v1 transaction format. Existing legacy and v0 transactions continue unchanged, Solana says, while applications can opt in when they need a single atomic transaction for work such as large multisignature instructions or zero-knowledge proofs.

The second performance change cuts slot time from 400 milliseconds to 200 milliseconds in four 50-millisecond stages. Solana says the network will not progress to the next step if block skip rates are too high, making live reliability data more consequential than the target number alone.

Faster slot production is not the same as final settlement. The Foundation says Alpenglow, which is designed to replace TowerBFT with a Votor voting system, targets roughly 150-millisecond finality in a later Agave 4.3 release. It says 4.2 will carry the code for additional testing, not mainnet activation, and lists October 2026 as the current target for that following release.

The immediate questions are whether validators adopt the client on schedule, whether the feature gates move after Aug. 17 and how state growth and skip rates behave. Solana has not disclosed a single threshold that would declare the rollout complete, and the Anza schedule can change. The next concrete checkpoint is the Aug. 3 25%-of-stake volunteer target, followed by the general-adoption and feature-activation windows, rather than an immediate Alpenglow launch or a promised change in SOL’s market price.
