  • Bitcoin traded near $64,579 and Ether near $1,869 on July 19, according to CoinGecko, as Coinbase readies the infrastructure release.

NEW YORK, July 19, 2026

Coinbase says Deribit’s next-generation matching engine will enter full production for Direct Gateways on July 20, the next operational step before the company moves International Exchange derivatives activity to a combined platform now scheduled for September 9.

The July 20 release is not the customer-account migration itself. Coinbase says that broader transition remains subject to client readiness and regulatory approvals, and that International Exchange-only institutions will need new access and API connections before it occurs.

CoinGecko data showed Bitcoin near $64,579 on July 19, with a market capitalization near $1.30 trillion, $16.0 billion in 24-hour trading volume and a 1.4% gain over seven days. Ether traded near $1,869, up 0.4% over 24 hours and 3.2% over seven days, with a market value around $225.5 billion, according to its CoinGecko market page.

Coinbase’s integration timetable lists the July 20 milestone as the “full production release of the Direct Gateways.” The company describes the new engine as a faster, more scalable system designed for lower-latency, sub-millisecond round-trip execution, while the exact performance observed after launch has not yet been disclosed.

The engine release follows Coinbase’s July 13 production access for binary market data and FIX drop copy, a trade-reporting and connectivity function used by professional firms. It also follows Coinbase’s May expansion of global crypto derivatives access for U.S. institutions, a step Daily Crypto Briefs examined in its report on Coinbase and Marex’s USDC margin-clearing link.

For traders, the immediate significance is operational rather than a change in a token’s economics. A working production engine is a prerequisite for unifying order flow, but the depth of the combined book, real-world latency and execution quality will need to be measured after the release and the September transition.

Coinbase Sets July 20 Deribit Engine Release

Coinbase said the combination of Coinbase International Exchange and Deribit is intended to put perpetuals, dated futures, options and spot under one platform. The company says the production engine will underpin a unified order book, although the timetable does not publish order-book depth, quoted spreads or a throughput benchmark.

The company distinguishes the engine rollout from the eventual user transition. Existing Coinbase app and website customers are expected to keep using the same front ends, while existing Deribit users keep their accounts and current settings. Spot trading for Coinbase users is listed as unaffected.

Coinbase says eligible U.S.-based Prime clients are expected to gain crypto-options access in the third quarter through Coinbase Financial Markets. The company says the availability date for retail options will be announced separately, so the July 20 milestone should not be read as an options launch for all Coinbase customers.

Deribit users are expected to get access to more than 125 additional perpetual contracts, including equity and commodity perpetuals, alongside Coinbase spot-market routing. Coinbase has not stated that every new product will be available on July 20 or specified availability by jurisdiction.

The development adds to the exchange industry’s drive to combine trading tools and collateral systems. Kraken’s recently launched BTC and ETH options for professional clients use a different venue, client base and access model, but both moves put greater focus on derivatives-market plumbing.

September Migration Brings Account and API Changes

Coinbase currently lists September 9 as the transition day for International Exchange activity, with about 30 minutes of downtime for Coinbase app and website users, existing Deribit users and International Exchange-only clients. Coinbase Prime clients are listed as having no downtime.

For retail perpetual traders, Coinbase says open positions will be settled at the current mark price, resulting balances will move to the account and positions will then be recreated at that same settlement price. The company says users may see multiple trade records, a reset average entry price and a small temporary profit-and-loss variance, but no trading or settlement fee.

International Exchange institutional clients have more preparation to do. Coinbase says they must verify access to the combined platform in advance, update API endpoints and, if using VPC peering, move to Private Link or colocation. The transition process also calls for open perpetual orders to be canceled before positions are settled and recreated through matched migration trades.

Those mechanics make the date more consequential for active desks than for casual spot users. A position-preserving migration can still affect order history, API workflows, collateral operations and risk controls, particularly for firms with automated strategies. Coinbase’s guide says clients will choose among four margin modes, but it has not published customer-by-customer migration outcomes.

The planned migration follows a wider move toward always-available risk tools. CME’s 24/7 crypto futures and options schedule addressed weekend access in regulated markets, whereas Coinbase’s Deribit work targets the venue and liquidity layer behind a broader suite of products.

Unified Liquidity Claims Await Post-Launch Data

Coinbase says the combined platform will consolidate International Exchange trading volume on Deribit and deepen liquidity across instruments. That is a claim about the intended market structure, not a confirmed measurement of live trading conditions before the engine has completed its first production day.

The main test will be whether execution quality improves across fast markets and different contract types. Lower latency and a larger shared user base can help a venue process orders, but spreads, slippage, open interest and liquidations are determined by actual participation as well as software.

This is especially relevant in a market still registering caution. The Crypto Fear and Greed Index stood at 25, or Extreme Fear, on July 19, a broad sentiment reading that does not measure demand for the Coinbase-Deribit platform specifically.

Coinbase’s next published dates give readers a clear sequence: the Direct Gateways production release on July 20, account-access checks before the migration and the currently scheduled September 9 transition. The useful evidence after that will be measured latency, uninterrupted access, order-book depth and whether the promised product expansion arrives on the stated terms.
