FRANKFURT, October 17, 2026
Deutsche Bank expects to launch Bitcoin and Ether custody in Germany within weeks and expand into Asian financial centres in 2027, its corporate banking co-head said October 16, as the lender prepares another route for institutions to hold digital assets through a bank.
Gerald Podobnik described the timetable to Reuters on the sidelines of the IMF and World Bank meetings in Bangkok. The reported plan begins with custody, then broadens into services involving stablecoins and blockchain securities. It does not establish that the full product range is already live.
ChartExchange’s Bitcoin composite recorded an October 15 UTC close of $82,131.46, up 0.693%, after a session low of $79,676.02. These completed-session figures provide market context, rather than evidence of a price response to the bank’s announcement.
In its September 16 custody announcement, Deutsche Bank said development would follow client demand, regulatory requirements and its risk appetite. That conditional approach remains relevant to the new timetable.
The October interview narrows September’s general target of a launch during 2026 and adds an Asian expansion plan. The immediate question is which services an eligible institution can actually use when onboarding begins.

Deutsche Bank custody starts with five listed assets
The bank’s digital asset custody site lists Bitcoin, Ether, USDC, EURC and EURAU. It describes safekeeping, transfers to third parties and internal movements between warm and cold storage as the initial services.
Its availability notice still ties access to completion of the applicable regulatory timeline and technical readiness. A supported-token list therefore describes intended product scope; it does not prove that a particular customer can transact immediately.
The September release targets eligible corporate and institutional clients, including asset managers, hedge funds and sovereign institutions. Deutsche Bank would manage wallets and private keys for them. The announced offering is not a retail launch.
The practical change is the delegation of operational work. A client can hold an asset directly while assigning key management to a custodian, rather than building its own storage systems. That arrangement differs from buying a fund share whose portfolio holds cryptocurrency.
The product page describes hardware security modules, warm and cold storage, client-asset segregation and customizable transfer approvals. Its corporate portal provides the access route. Those features address who can authorize movements and how keys are protected; they do not determine the market value of the holdings.
The rollout adds a specific timetable to the broader move by European banks into crypto. Institutional custody, retail trading and stablecoin issuance remain different activities, even when the same banking group pursues several of them.
MiCA custody rules separate safekeeping from deposit protection
The European Union’s MiCA custody requirements, in Article 75, require a client agreement specifying responsibilities, security arrangements, custody policy and charges. Providers must keep individual position records and procedures for returning client assets or access to them.
The rules also require client holdings to be separated from the provider’s own assets, including legal segregation under applicable law. This addresses ownership and creditor claims if a custodian fails, rather than promising that the crypto-assets retain their purchase price.
Article 75 makes custodians liable for losses resulting from incidents attributable to them, capped at the lost asset’s market value when the loss occurred. It distinguishes those incidents from events independently arising from a distributed ledger outside the provider’s control.
That distinction gives contracts and custody policies practical importance. A balance displayed in a banking portal does not, on its own, explain responsibility for a lost key, an unauthorized transfer or a blockchain failure.
Deutsche Bank’s September disclosure separately says crypto-assets lack deposit-guarantee protection comparable to eligible bank deposits. It also warns that custody does not remove price, fraud or counterparty risks.
The relevant comparison is therefore between custody arrangements and their enforceable obligations. Treating every asset accessible through a bank as insured cash would erase differences that both the bank and the regulation preserve.
Asia expansion follows Germany’s Bitcoin custody rollout
Podobnik linked the initiative to an 8% compound annual growth target for corporate banking through 2028, Reuters reported. That is a divisional target, not a forecast for crypto custody revenue or customer asset balances.
The interview described later services helping customers move into and out of mainstream stablecoins, alongside plans for tokenized deposits and support for blockchain securities such as digital bonds. The Asian expansion is planned for next year, but individual financial centres were not named.
A stablecoin’s inclusion in the custody list does not establish a live conversion service. Holding a token, exchanging it for conventional money and issuing a digital security involve separate instructions and operational capabilities.
The bank already provides conventional custody and fund services in more than 30 markets. That existing network offers distribution context, but it is not a count of countries where the new crypto service has launched. The German start and proposed Asian expansion need to be assessed against their own rollout milestones.
The project has a longer history. Taurus announced its global partnership with Deutsche Bank in September 2023, covering custody and tokenization technology. The bank had also participated in Taurus’ $65 million Series B that year. Those earlier steps establish preparation, rather than a 2023 customer launch.
The 2023 agreement covered technology for cryptocurrencies, tokenized assets and digital currencies. It joined two related functions: protecting existing assets and creating blockchain representations of financial claims. A technology partnership can support both without showing that every resulting service has cleared approvals or attracted customers. The October custody timetable is therefore a more concrete commercial milestone than the original infrastructure agreement.
There is a similar distinction between holding a blockchain security and settling its payment. The ECB’s Pontes launch addresses settlement in central bank money, a separate function from a commercial bank safeguarding a client’s assets.
Stablecoin funding is another adjacent service. Visa Direct’s commercial USDC prefunding deployment concerns funding payment balances. Its production status does not establish readiness for Deutsche Bank’s planned conversion services.
Alternative.me’s Fear & Greed Index read 63, or Greed, when checked October 16, compared with 53 the previous day. It measures broader crypto sentiment, rather than demand for bank custody.

The reviewed disclosures do not establish custody volumes, a detailed fee schedule or dates for the broader services. Until those appear, the October interview supports a nearer launch timetable rather than a completed international rollout.
