STAMFORD, Conn., October 21, 2026

Grayscale expanded in-kind access across 10 crypto funds on October 21, setting approximate entry minimums from $80,300 as Bitcoin traded near $84,600 and issuers widened the routes between token holdings and brokerage portfolios.

Eligible investors can contribute digital assets for fund shares, avoiding an initial sale of the underlying token for cash. The announcement covers Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana and six other assets, with orders routed through an authorized participant or a firm connected to one.

Bitcoin stood at $84,595.51 in ChartExchange’s historical table at approximately 21:01 UTC, up 1.998% in the unfinished October 21 UTC session. Its range was $82,535 to $84,930. These figures describe market conditions, rather than demonstrate a reaction to Grayscale’s announcement.

Steve Vanourny, Grayscale’s head of index, said the mechanism connects direct crypto ownership with conventional portfolio management, according to the firm’s October 21 company release. The company presented institutional custody and account flexibility as potential benefits.

The expansion follows the SEC’s July 2025 approval of in-kind creations and redemptions for Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded products. Wednesday’s development concerns access across Grayscale’s lineup; it does not announce a new SEC decision or a measured inflow of fresh capital.

The Bitcoin and Ethereum entries are the Mini products, tickers BTC and ETH. Grayscale’s older GBTC and ETHE vehicles are absent from this particular list. The announcement does not provide a timetable for adding them.

The range also separates this service from an ordinary purchase of a few shares through a brokerage. These minimums govern the announced token-contribution route, rather than establish a universal minimum for buying the listed securities on an exchange.

Several products already have separate operating histories. Grayscale’s Hyperliquid staking ETF launch established HYPG’s market entry months earlier. Its inclusion here changes the available subscription route; it is not a second launch of the fund.

Authorized participants connect tokens to fund shares

An authorized participant is a financial institution that deals directly with a fund to create or redeem large blocks of shares. Grayscale says clients using this primary-market route must work with one, or with another firm that provides access to one.

The SEC’s July 29, 2025 approval allowed Bitcoin and Ether products to use this mechanism after earlier approvals had restricted them to cash transactions. The regulator described greater flexibility and potential cost savings for issuers, participants and investors.

The distinction is between moving the asset and moving money to buy it. In a cash transaction, cash is delivered and the underlying exposure must be acquired. An in-kind contribution delivers the asset itself for shares representing exposure through the product.

The SEC’s explanation of ETF market mechanics distinguishes these large primary-market transactions from exchange trades between investors. That bulletin addresses registered investment-company ETFs; its legal protections should not be assumed to apply to crypto commodity trusts.

Grayscale’s release addresses subscriptions. It does not announce an unrestricted service through which every shareholder can return individual shares for tokens. The direction of the advertised transaction is therefore important when assessing what a holder can actually do.

Nor does the availability of subscriptions establish additional spot buying. Existing tokens moving into a fund can change where exposure is held without demonstrating a new exchange purchase. Evidence of adoption would require subsequent share-creation, holdings or flow disclosures.

Crypto ETP transfers retain tax and custody risks

Grayscale warns that tax treatment is uncertain and taxable events may arise, particularly if the contributed asset differs from the product’s underlying cryptocurrency. The announcement provides no blanket tax exemption, and its potential execution savings are not a published guarantee of lower total costs.

The SEC’s spot Bitcoin and Ether investor bulletin explains the broader trade-off. Fund shares can reduce a holder’s direct responsibility for wallets and keys, but the product itself remains exposed to the underlying asset and custody risks.

These products are not registered investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940, even when their names include ETF. The SEC says their securities offerings and ongoing reports operate under other federal securities laws, with a different set of protections from registered mutual funds.

Share prices can also diverge from the value of the assets backing them. A premium means shares trade above that value; a discount means they trade below it. Moving into a securities account does not ensure the investor can exit at precisely the underlying token’s quoted price.

Entry mechanics are separate from the treatment of staking income. Daily Crypto Briefs previously examined GSOL’s quarterly cash distribution plan, which concerns how rewards reach shareholders. Wednesday’s access announcement does not itself revise that policy.

Alternative.me’s Fear & Greed Index stood at 63 on October 21, compared with 55 the previous day. Both readings indicated Greed; neither measures participation in Grayscale’s new route.

Grayscale did not disclose subscription volumes or a facilitator-fee schedule. The next useful evidence is actual use of the route and product-specific execution terms, which will determine whether the announced access translates into measurable changes in fund holdings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Grayscale's in-kind crypto subscriptions?

Eligible investors contribute digital assets in exchange for shares of a Grayscale product, instead of first selling the underlying asset for cash. Access to the primary market requires an authorized participant or a conduit to one.

What is the minimum for Grayscale in-kind subscriptions?

Grayscale's approximate minimums at October 20, 2026 prices range from $80,300 for GSOL to $364,800 for its Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF. They fluctuate with token prices and can change without notice.

Which 10 Grayscale funds support the announced in-kind access?

The announcement lists GAVA, BTC, GLNK, ETH, GDOG, HYPG, GSOL, GSUI, GXRP and ZCSH. GBTC and ETHE are not among the listed products.

Are Grayscale in-kind transfers guaranteed to be tax-free?

No. Grayscale says tax treatment is uncertain and taxable events may occur, particularly when an investor contributes assets other than the product's underlying cryptocurrency.

Does the announcement report new crypto ETF inflows?

No. It announces a subscription route without disclosing adoption or flow totals. Moving existing tokens into a fund does not by itself establish a new purchase on a crypto exchange.
