KB Kookmin Bank plans to launch a blockchain-based corporate payment service on JPMorgan’s Kinexys network in August, initially handling U.S.-dollar transfers across 10 countries for import and export businesses, according to local reporting cited by The Block.
The reported rollout would make South Korea’s largest lender the first financial institution in the country to use Kinexys for corporate payment settlement. It is an institutional payments product, not a consumer crypto offering or a public-token launch.
The service is expected to be available through KB Kookmin’s branches in South Korea and its Singapore branch. The initial corridor list includes South Korea, the United States, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, India, Thailand, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and South Africa, according to the report.
KB Kookmin targets 10 countries for Kinexys dollar payments
The immediate value proposition is straightforward: a Korean trade business can send or receive dollars using a settlement rail designed to operate beyond the usual cut-off times of correspondent banking. The reporting said the offering will focus on import and export clients, where payment timing, foreign exchange and confirmation can otherwise pass through several institutions.
Kinexys is JPMorgan’s institutional blockchain business, formerly branded as Onyx. Its official overview describes a platform spanning programmable payments, tokenization and financial infrastructure, while its payment tools are designed for approved institutional participants rather than open crypto-wallet users.
The report did not say what KB Kookmin will charge, which clients will be eligible at launch, or what share of each payment will settle directly on Kinexys. That distinction matters because a blockchain settlement layer can coexist with SWIFT messaging, local payment systems and conventional foreign-exchange processes at the edges of a transaction.
JPMorgan has described the network’s scale in its own filings. In its 2025 annual-report letter, the bank said Kinexys processed more than $5 billion daily and characterized it as a platform for secure, real-time institutional payments and settlement. That is a more useful benchmark than treating the development as a generic bank blockchain pilot.
Kinexys expands South Korea’s institutional blockchain rails
Bitcoin traded near $64,729 at the time of writing, up 7.8% from roughly $60,022 a month earlier, based on CoinGecko market data. The price move is not evidence that the KB Kookmin service will affect bitcoin demand, but it places the payment-infrastructure announcement in a market that has recovered through July.

BTCThe development also adds a South Korean bank to a pattern of institutional experiments around always-on money movement. Daily Crypto Briefs recently covered Chainlink’s Project Pangea, which is exploring near-real-time foreign-exchange settlement between Europe and South Korea through compliant digital-money rails.
The key difference is the network model. Project Pangea is a working group around potential euro and won stablecoins, while Kinexys is JPMorgan’s permissioned infrastructure and uses bank-led arrangements. Neither approach is equivalent to a customer sending a public stablecoin from one self-custody wallet to another.
KB Kookmin’s planned use of a dollar rail comes as South Korean policymakers have separately sought to limit corporate use of dollar-pegged stablecoins, a tension we examined in Korea’s corporate stablecoin restrictions. The result is a clearer divide between supervised bank platforms and open, privately issued dollar tokens.
Corporate trade payments remain the test for tokenized deposits
The story is about corporate cash management more than speculative trading. A bank that can confirm and settle trade-related dollar liquidity at more hours of the day can reduce idle balances and reconciliation work, provided the legal, foreign-exchange and local-bank legs of a payment are connected as designed.
That adoption path resembles JPMorgan Asset Management’s decision to put a tokenized money-market fund on Ethereum, though the products are structurally different. The fund uses a public chain for an investment product; Kinexys is a controlled network meant to move institutional payment and settlement flows.
There is no disclosed transaction-volume forecast for KB Kookmin’s service, and no public technical specification identifies the precise settlement sequence for every one of the 10 markets. Those omissions limit claims about near-term revenue or crypto-market impact, but a production launch would provide a concrete test of whether tokenized commercial-bank money can fit trade payments without replacing the rest of the banking stack.
Crypto sentiment remains cautious despite the broader July recovery.
Fear & Greed Index
July 27, 2026The next checkpoints are the August rollout, confirmation of the client and corridor scope, and any disclosure from KB Kookmin or JPMorgan on payment volumes. The early question is operational: whether businesses use the new rail often enough to make 24/7 settlement a standard trade-finance tool rather than another limited blockchain proof of concept.
