MetaMask added Stellar as a default network in its mobile app and browser extension on October 29, expanding access to payments as XLM fell about 6% that day, but newly generated addresses still need at least 1 XLM to become active on-chain.
The announcement published by Stellar says existing MetaMask accounts gain a Stellar address derived from their current recovery phrase. The change brings another network into the wallet without requiring a separate wallet setup.
XLM closed October 29 at $0.1619, down 5.999%, after trading between $0.1602 and $0.1737, according to ChartExchange’s completed UTC sessions. Those prices describe the market backdrop, not evidence that the integration caused the decline.

XLMMetaMask’s Stellar addresses still need activation
At Lisbon’s Meridian conference, MetaMask and the Stellar Development Foundation presented the integration as live on both platforms. The release lists holding, sending and receiving XLM, trustline assets and Soroban tokens, alongside swaps between supported networks.
In an attributed statement, MetaMask product chief Gal Eldar described the addition as part of expanding access to financial transfers regardless of where users live. The release cites Stellar’s 2025 payment volume of $55.6 billion, up 52% year over year, as existing network activity rather than new MetaMask volume.
The distinction between distribution and usage is central to assessing the launch. An address appearing in a wallet does not establish that its owner has deposited money, made a payment or moved an existing balance from another chain. The announcement supplies no integration-specific funded-account or transaction total.
MetaMask’s Stellar support guide says the first deposit must be at least 1 XLM. Before that, the address has no on-chain presence. Each trustline, an account’s permission to hold a particular asset, adds another 0.5 XLM to its reserve.
For someone opening a new account, that makes the displayed address a starting point. The balance available for payments must also accommodate the network’s reserve rules. A wallet can simplify access while leaving the underlying blockchain’s funding requirements in place.
Stellar trustlines change cross-chain transfers
MetaMask distinguishes transfers within Stellar from bridging into it. Same-chain swaps can bundle trustline creation into the transaction. For cross-chain swaps of tokens other than XLM, users must activate the trustline first; MetaMask warns that funds can be lost if bridged assets arrive without it.
The wallet says it prompts users before confirmation. Ordinary Stellar token sends without the required recipient trustline fail instead. That difference makes transaction type relevant even when both routes appear inside the same application.
Stellar’s network FAQ separately explains the economics: a basic account requires two base reserves, currently 1 XLM in total, while each subentry adds a base reserve. Minimum balances and fees can also be sponsored by another account.
Reserves therefore differ from a purchase price for the wallet. They support entries maintained on the ledger, while transaction fees pay for operations. The FAQ lists a base operation fee of 0.00001 XLM and additional resource fees for smart contracts, so one headline network-fee figure does not describe every possible interaction.
The payments expansion follows MetaMask’s earlier US crypto-card rollout. The new network announcement does not by itself establish that every Stellar asset is supported by the card. Wallet storage, swaps and merchant spending have separate product requirements.
Curve’s Stellar launch adds liquidity, with limits
The wallet announcement coincided with Curve’s StableSwap launch on Stellar, its first native deployment outside Ethereum-compatible networks. Curve says it rebuilt the contracts for Soroban, Stellar’s smart-contract platform, rather than copying its existing contracts across.
Swaps and liquidity deposits are available through a beta interface. Curve describes this as a lite deployment, with more interface features to follow. Its FXSwap product, intended for assets whose relative prices change, remains subject to an audit before launch.
Together, the developments address different parts of using a network: a wallet provides access, while a pool provides assets against which to trade. Neither announcement establishes the depth available for any particular order. Curve also identifies smart-contract and stablecoin-depeg risks for its pools.
A separate infrastructure milestone remains ahead. Stellar’s Bell upgrade guide schedules testnet and mainnet votes for November 3 and November 23, both at 17:00 UTC. As our coverage of Bell’s wallet preparation requirements explains, these are planned votes, not completed activations.
Broader sentiment remained weak when checked October 30: Alternative.me’s Bitcoin-focused index read 30, or Fear, versus 51 a day earlier. It does not measure adoption of Stellar’s new wallet integration.
Fear & Greed Index
Checked Oct. 30, 2026 UTCThe next useful evidence will be funded-account activity, completed transfers and disclosed integration usage. Those measures would show whether easier wallet access translates into payments; the launch announcement alone cannot answer that question.

Frequently Asked Questions
When did MetaMask add Stellar as a default network?
The joint announcement dates the Mobile and Extension launch to October 29, 2026.
Does a new MetaMask Stellar address already exist on-chain?
No. MetaMask says the address needs an initial deposit of at least 1 XLM to activate.
How much XLM does a trustline reserve?
Each trustline adds 0.5 XLM to the account reserve.
Does default wallet support mean Curve's full Stellar stack is live?
No. Curve describes a lite StableSwap deployment with a beta interface; FXSwap follows its audit.
