SoFi Crypto Revenue Hits $162M, but Nets Just $1.6M

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 29, 2026

SoFi reported $161.6 million in third-quarter gross crypto transaction revenue but just $1.633 million net, putting a smaller earnings contribution behind its expanding digital-asset business as banks broaden their crypto offerings.

The October 27 results cover the three months ended September 30. They separate the value reported before associated transaction costs from the revenue remaining afterward, a distinction central to assessing the bank’s crypto economics.

Bitcoin closed October 28 at $81,249.31, up 0.562% during the completed UTC session, after trading between $80,270.68 and $81,857, according to ChartExchange’s historical data. Those prices provide market context, rather than evidence of a reaction to SoFi’s earnings.

In its earnings tables, SoFi said net crypto transaction revenue primarily comprises fees for facilitating customers’ purchase and sale orders.

The results follow the bank’s November 2025 return to consumer crypto trading. They also offer a banking-sector comparison with Robinhood’s latest crypto earnings, although different accounting presentations require care when comparing headline revenue.

SoFi’s crypto costs narrow the revenue headline

The company recorded $161.606 million in crypto transaction revenue and $159.973 million in related costs. Subtracting the latter leaves $1.633 million, roughly 1% of the gross amount. That percentage is a calculation from the reported figures, rather than a company-defined profit margin.

Net transaction revenue also differs from net income. It does not establish how much the crypto business earned after all operating expenses and taxes. Calling the remaining sum crypto profit would therefore imply a level of profitability disclosure the figures do not provide.

The distinction changes the scale of the story. SoFi reported total quarterly net revenue of $1.385 billion and company-wide net income of approximately $241 million. Crypto’s net transaction revenue represented about 0.12% of consolidated net revenue, calculated from those totals.

That comparison does not assign all potential benefits of crypto to one fee line. A banking relationship can include other products. It does, however, keep a large gross transaction figure from being mistaken for an equally large contribution to the company’s revenue after associated costs.

An investor comparing platforms needs consistent measures: gross transaction revenue against gross transaction revenue, or net revenue against net revenue. Mixing the two can exaggerate differences in business scale before considering customer behavior, pricing or operating costs.

503,070 crypto accounts do not measure active traders

SoFi’s quarter-end crypto product count reached 503,070. Its second-quarter results already listed 388,336, implying an increase of 114,734, or approximately 29.5%, in three months. The earlier disclosure means this was not the first reported crypto account count.

The company’s product definition counts accounts opened through the reporting date. That is different from a count of customers who traded during September, held a positive balance or returned every month. Account growth alone cannot resolve those questions.

That distinction creates two separate tests for adoption. Opening an account indicates access to the service; recurring transactions indicate continuing use. Revenue then adds a third question: how much that use contributes after associated transaction costs.

SoFi’s June regulatory filing describes crypto as integrated with its bank accounts, allowing members to fund transactions from checking and savings. The arrangement reduces the need to move money to an outside platform before trading.

That distribution channel offers a potential advantage, but an integrated app does not itself establish retention or trading frequency. Subsequent disclosures of active accounts, customer balances and repeat transactions would help distinguish initial sign-ups from sustained demand.

SOFIE’s October launch falls outside Q3

The bank’s original consumer launch announcement dates the current trading rollout to November 11, 2025. That provides the relevant operating timeline for the September-quarter figures, rather than treating the service as a product introduced with this earnings release.

SoFi then announced SOFIE on October 22, offering a variable 4.40% APY on tokenized deposits at launch. That happened after the reporting period closed and cannot explain third-quarter results.

As covered in the earlier SOFIE deposit and insurance breakdown, the deposit and the transferable stablecoin used after conversion have different protections. A common interface does not make every crypto-related balance an insured bank deposit.

The timing also separates a broader product strategy from measured commercial results. October’s announcement expands what customers can do, while the September figures describe what the earlier business actually reported. Future results will be needed to assess adoption of the new offering.

Alternative.me’s Bitcoin sentiment index stood at 51, neutral, when checked October 29. It measures broader crypto sentiment, rather than demand for SoFi accounts.

The next useful disclosures are net crypto revenue growth, account activity and the contribution from products launched after September. The current figures show wider account adoption, but leave crypto’s standalone net profitability unresolved.
