HONG KONG, September 26, 2026

CoinMarketCap acquired CoinGlass, bringing a derivatives-data platform with more than 5 million monthly users under the price tracker’s ownership as traders monitor Bitcoin’s leveraged markets.

The September 25 announcement says the deal is complete and financial terms are undisclosed. CoinGlass will operate independently; its website, app, free tools, API and pricing remain unchanged, the companies said.

Bitcoin closed September 25 at $84,076, down about 0.36% from the previous day’s $84,378, according to CoinGecko. Reported volume was roughly $38.0 billion. These are broader market figures, with no established causal connection to the acquisition.

CoinMarketCap CEO Rush said in the announcement: “Coinglass stays Coinglass, and nothing changes for its users.”

The transaction follows Binance’s April 2020 purchase of CoinMarketCap. That deal also came with a pledge of operational independence, making the distinction between ownership and data production central to this acquisition’s reader impact.

CoinGlass Joins CoinMarketCap’s Data Business

The buyer reports 115 million monthly users; CoinGlass covers 28 exchanges and more than 2,500 instruments, according to the announcement. Those company figures describe reach and coverage, rather than an independently audited measure of unique traders.

The acquisition connects two different ways of observing crypto markets. A price tracker shows where assets trade and how their values change. A derivatives dashboard can add information about outstanding contracts and the cost of holding leveraged positions.

CoinMarketCap’s published product timeline records its on-chain DexScan launch in August 2022 and its Bitcoin ETF tracker in November 2023. The CoinGlass deal fits that expansion from prices into the infrastructure used to interpret market activity.

It also differs from an exchange launching another trading venue. Coinbase’s UK derivatives expansion changed access to leveraged products. Here, the immediate development concerns ownership of information services used to assess those products.

Wider distribution could make leverage indicators easier to encounter alongside spot prices. That is a potential benefit, rather than evidence that the acquisition will improve execution, reduce liquidation risk or make a dashboard’s signals more predictive.

The audience totals should not be added together as a new combined customer count. A trader may already use both services, and the announcement provides no overlap calculation. Nor do exchange and instrument counts establish complete visibility into every position in the market.

Open Interest Is Different From Bitcoin Volume

CoinGlass’s open-interest explainer defines the measure as outstanding derivatives contracts. Volume records trading during a period; open interest records positions still open. A contract has a long and a short, so a larger total alone does not establish bullish demand.

That distinction becomes important when a price increase coincides with a buildup in contracts. The combination may warrant closer examination of leverage, but it cannot identify every participant’s strategy. Closing positions and transferring existing positions can also produce different changes in the total.

The CoinGlass funding guide explains another measure: periodic payments between holders of perpetual contracts. Positive funding means longs pay shorts; negative funding reverses the flow. Perpetuals do not expire, and the mechanism helps align their prices with the underlying spot market.

Funding consequently adds a holding-cost dimension that a spot-price chart cannot supply. A comparison across venues needs the settlement interval as well as the quoted rate. A number expressed for one interval should not be treated as equivalent to a number for another.

The limits are equally relevant for liquidation maps. CoinGlass’s platform guide describes its heatmap as calculating potential liquidation concentrations from market data and leverage levels. Estimated future concentrations are different from forced closures already recorded.

The distinction is visible in earlier Bitcoin liquidation-cascade coverage, where reported forced closures described a market event. A bright area on a heatmap describes modeled exposure and does not guarantee that price will reach it.

Binance Ownership Puts Data Independence in Focus

Binance’s 2020 announcement said CoinMarketCap would remain a separate business and that Binance would have no bearing on its rankings. That historical commitment is relevant context, but it is not independent proof of how every future data decision will be made.

Operational independence can preserve a service’s brand and day-to-day work while ownership still changes. For users assessing the combined business, the useful evidence will be identifiable data sources, consistent methods and transparent treatment of competing exchanges.

CoinMarketCap’s methodology page states its aim of supplying accurate, timely and unbiased information. That is a stated standard. Whether particular data meet it requires examining the underlying methods and coverage rather than relying on the ownership announcement alone.

The wider trading landscape also continues to change. Kalshi’s stock-index and copper perpetual-futures filings illustrate the range of products seeking entry into derivatives markets. Product eligibility, contract design and regulatory status remain separate questions from the availability of analytics.

Alternative.me’s Crypto Fear and Greed Index read 74, or Greed, on September 26. It measures broader crypto sentiment, rather than confidence in this transaction or the accuracy of any individual derivatives indicator.

The acquisition announcement does not specify a dated integration roadmap or future changes to data governance. Subsequent product notices, methodology disclosures and pricing updates will show whether the ownership change eventually alters the services traders use.
