Chip-stock perpetual futures traded on crypto venues including Binance and Hyperliquid suffered about $51.6 million in liquidations within ten minutes Saturday, according to CoinGlass figures cited by CoinDesk, exposing weekend pricing risks while underlying stock markets were closed.
The tally covers contracts tied to semiconductor companies and funds between 21:22 and 21:32 UTC on October 17. About $38 million involved bets on rising prices, according to the CoinDesk report. It measures positions forcibly closed, rather than a verified sum of cash lost by account holders.
Bitcoin’s completed October 17 session closed at $81,381.40, down 0.146%, after trading between $80,700 and $81,812, ChartExchange data showed. That broader daily backdrop should not be confused with the much sharper intraminute moves in chip-linked derivatives.
In his published trade-sequence analysis, Tread.fi chief executive David Jeong identified the first large seller-initiated SanDisk trade on Binance at 21:21:59.39 UTC, followed by Hyperliquid orders at 21:21:59.87. His analysis describes the sequence; it does not establish who controlled every participating address.
The episode follows the expansion of stock-linked products on crypto exchanges. Perpetuals add a different exposure: leveraged positions can be closed by margin rules even while the shares they reference are unavailable on the underlying market.

Hyperliquid chip perps fall as liquidations mount
Daily Crypto Briefs retrieved Hyperliquid’s public one-minute candle records for Trade XYZ’s MU market and WDC contract. Compared with their 21:20 UTC candle closes, the lowest trades from 21:21 through 21:32 UTC were about 6.48% lower for Micron-linked MU and 7.05% lower for Western Digital-linked WDC.
MU moved from $873.41 to a low of $816.79. WDC moved from $321.06 to $298.44. These calculations concern executed derivative trades on one deployment, rather than cash-stock prices, liquidation-trigger prices or exchange-wide loss totals.
The independently checked candles corroborate a rapid selloff. They cannot independently reconstruct CoinGlass’s full liquidation tally, which includes other instruments and venues. Daily Crypto Briefs had not reproduced that total as of this article’s source review.
Jeong’s account identifies roughly ten addresses submitting immediate-or-cancel sell orders across six chip-linked contracts within 1.8 seconds, followed by another synchronized burst. Such orders execute immediately to the extent possible and cancel the remainder. His description of new shorts is an analyst’s interpretation of the records, rather than an exchange finding of coordinated misconduct.
He also reported substantially greater early SanDisk volume on Binance than Trade XYZ, followed by spikes in Hyperliquid MU volume that he attributed to cascading liquidations. The public post does not say he personally placed the initial sell orders.
Transaction volume, liquidation notional and realized losses measure different things. Selling activity can include traders exiting voluntarily, new short positions and compulsory closures; adding those categories together would overstate the documented impact.
Trade XYZ uses internal pricing over the weekend
Trade XYZ’s perpetual-contract documentation describes instruments without a fixed expiry that provide price exposure and settle in USDC. Owning one does not itself confer the underlying company’s shares or voting rights.
The product distinction also separates these contracts from the tokenized-stock voting arrangements offered elsewhere. Similar ticker names can conceal different ownership, collateral and settlement terms.
According to Trade XYZ’s oracle methodology, outside market data takes priority when available. When it is unavailable, the reference starts from the last external price and adjusts using order-book information through a smoothed calculation with a 30-minute time constant.
That creates a route for weekend buying and selling to influence the reference used by the system. It does not mean the oracle instantly copies the latest trade, nor that an isolated low print automatically determines every account’s outcome.
The mark-price rules combine the oracle, a smoothed adjustment for the gap between the market midpoint and oracle, and a component derived from bids, offers and the last trade. The median becomes the mark used for margin and liquidation calculations.
Trade XYZ’s liquidation documentation says positions first face market-order closure when account equity falls below maintenance requirements. Remaining collateral can stay with the trader if those requirements are restored. This is another reason liquidated position value cannot simply be labeled money permanently lost.
Account structure changes the reach of a forced closure. The same documentation distinguishes isolated margin, which allocates collateral to a particular position, from cross margin, which shares collateral across positions. It says a backstop liquidation of cross positions transfers the cross positions and cross margin to the liquidator. An isolated position does not draw on that shared collateral in the same way.
Consequently, two accounts trading the same ticker can experience different outcomes during the same price move. Entry levels, available collateral, funding payments and other positions all affect the margin calculation. A percentage drop in the contract is evidence of market movement, but it cannot identify how much an unnamed trader deposited or recovered.
External stock feeds resume before Monday’s open
The platform’s discovery-bound controls limit mark-price movement around a reference, with permitted re-anchoring governed by market-specific parameters. The documentation does not support assuming one universal fixed weekend price floor for every stock contract.
Those controls are distinct from a promise that a leveraged position survives until the next cash-market session. Assessing a particular liquidation requires its mark-price history, margin mode, collateral and applicable market settings, rather than the candle chart alone.
Trade XYZ’s U.S. stock pricing schedule says external coverage runs from Sunday at 8:05 p.m. Eastern to Friday at 8 p.m., incorporating overnight quotes from Blue Ocean ATS. For this weekend, that scheduled restart is October 19 at 00:05 UTC, ahead of Monday’s regular U.S. session.
The oracle documentation says externally derived pricing resumes on the next tick when outside inputs return. That makes the overnight feed restart an earlier comparison point than Monday’s opening bell, subject to each instrument’s coverage and actual feed availability.

Observed October 18, 2026Alternative.me displayed 53, or Neutral, during the source check. Its Bitcoin-focused sentiment measure does not describe positioning in these individual stock perpetuals.
The reviewed sources do not establish aggregate realized cash losses, common control of the selling addresses or an official finding of manipulation. The next checks are whether external feeds restart as scheduled, how derivative prices compare with resumed stock trading, and whether venues publish an incident-specific explanation.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much was liquidated in the chip-stock perpetual crash?
CoinGlass data cited by CoinDesk put liquidated position value at about $51.6 million between 21:22 and 21:32 UTC on October 17, 2026. About $38 million was in long positions. That is not a verified total of traders' cash losses.
Did Micron shares crash on Saturday?
The weekend decline was in stock-linked perpetual derivatives. Daily Crypto Briefs checked Hyperliquid's Micron-linked minute candles and calculated a 6.48% fall from the 21:20 UTC close to the low through 21:32 UTC. That does not establish a matching move in cash shares.
Are Hyperliquid stock perpetuals actual shares?
Trade XYZ describes its perpetuals as price-exposure derivatives without a fixed expiry, margined and settled in USDC. A derivative position does not itself give the holder the underlying company's shares.
When does Trade XYZ resume external U.S. stock pricing?
Its published methodology says external coverage runs from Sunday 8:05 p.m. to Friday 8 p.m. Eastern, including overnight trading supplied by Blue Ocean ATS. For October 18, the scheduled Sunday restart converts to October 19 at 00:05 UTC, subject to feed and instrument availability.
Does a low trade price automatically trigger liquidation?
Trade XYZ says liquidation checks use its calculated mark price. The last executed trade is an input to one component, but it is not the entire mark-price calculation. A candle low alone cannot establish an account's liquidation trigger.
