PALO ALTO, California, August 10, 2026
Pi Network said every Mainnet node must run version 26.1 by Aug. 11, giving operators one day to complete the active Protocol 26 migration as PI traded near $0.08885, up 1.37% over 24 hours, according to market data reviewed Sunday.
The deadline applies to the move from version 25.2 to 26.1, the last active step in Pi’s published upgrade sequence before version 27.0. The project has not announced a deadline or release for Protocol 27, leaving the immediate operational focus on the current node update.
PI’s market capitalization was about $981.2 million and its 24-hour volume was about $8.1 million at the time of the snapshot, according to CoinMarketCap’s Pi page. The token traded between $0.08828 and $0.09118 over the preceding day, while the Crypto Fear and Greed Index stood at 30, a reading classified as Fear.
Pi’s official instruction document says: “All nodes are required to be on version 26.1 by 08/11/2026.” The document characterizes the 25.2-to-26.1 migration as active and expects downtime of less than five minutes, while cautioning operators not to upgrade all of their nodes simultaneously.

PIPi Network Protocol 26 Deadline Is Aug. 11
Pi’s node page now carries a notice that the Mainnet protocol is under upgrade and that every Mainnet node must move to v26. It directs operators to the detailed deadline and installation instructions, which identify version 26.1 as the required release.
The instructions list eight completed upgrades in 2026 before the current one: 19.6, 19.9, 20.2, 21.2, 22.1, 23.0, 24.1 and 25.2. Protocol 26.1 follows those steps in sequence. The next step, 27.0, is labeled “Do NOT start,” with its timing and release details still to be determined.
That distinction limits what the deadline establishes. It confirms a required infrastructure migration, rather than a token event, a new exchange listing or a completed Protocol 27 launch. Pi did not disclose an expected number of nodes that have already completed the move or a network-wide adoption percentage.
The project says Pi nodes use a consensus model based on the Stellar Consensus Protocol, in which nodes form trusted groups known as quorum slices. Pi describes its nodes as validating transactions on a distributed ledger, making operational continuity more consequential than an ordinary desktop-app update.
Network software deadlines can create practical friction even where the technical change is short. Solana’s scheduled Agave 4.2 rollout also placed validator and infrastructure operators at the center of a planned protocol transition, though its technical scope and timetable differ from Pi’s.
Pi Desktop and Linux Operators Have Different Paths
Pi says no manual action is required for Pi Desktop users on Windows or macOS: starting Pi Node triggers the upgrade automatically. That is not the same path for self-managed Linux operators.
For Linux nodes using Pi’s command-line tool, the instructions say operators with auto-update enabled need take no action. Those without it can run the project’s update command and monitor the status until the API reports that the node is synchronized.
Self-managed Docker operators are told to use the active pinetwork/pi-node-docker:organization-mainnet-v1.0-p26.1.0 image and the project’s Protocol 26.1 release notes. Pi advises operators with multiple nodes to divert traffic to another node or the project endpoint while an upgrade is in progress.
The document says an operator who misses a required step can try completing the skipped intermediate upgrades, but may have to resynchronize the node from scratch. Pi did not say that missing the Aug. 11 target changes mobile-user balances, mining access or token withdrawals.
The focus on node operations mirrors a broader pattern across crypto infrastructure. Sui’s quantum-safe-account rollout put changes to account handling on a long schedule, while Pi is giving node operators a near-term version requirement. In both cases, published timelines describe technical plans, not a guarantee of a token-price outcome.
Protocol 27 Is Not Active Yet
Pi’s own schedule keeps Protocol 27 outside the current deadline. The 26.1-to-27.0 row has no release image, notes or completion date, and tells operators not to begin that migration until explicitly instructed.
That makes the Aug. 11 event a checkpoint for network maintenance rather than a final upgrade. It also leaves open what Protocol 27 will change, whether any later deadline will be imposed and how widely the current version has been adopted once the immediate window passes.
PI remains far below its $2.98 all-time high recorded in February 2025, according to CoinMarketCap, which lists the token’s circulating supply at about 11.04 billion PI out of a 100 billion maximum supply. The price data do not establish that the Protocol 26 deadline is driving current trading.
Other infrastructure changes can have narrower consequences than their headline suggests. Daily Crypto Briefs recently covered Sui’s planned JSON-RPC shutdown, which required users and developers to follow a specific service transition. Pi’s update similarly has an immediate operational instruction, but the project has not released an adoption tally or a Protocol 27 timetable.
The next confirmed marker is Aug. 11. Operators running self-managed nodes will be watching whether their instances reach the required 26.1 version and synchronize normally; for everyone else, the material unanswered question is when Pi will activate and describe Protocol 27.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Pi Network Protocol 26 deadline?
Pi Network's published instructions say all Mainnet nodes are required to run version 26.1 by Aug. 11, 2026. The active transition is from version 25.2 to 26.1.
Do Pi Desktop users need to manually upgrade to Protocol 26?
Pi says no action is required for Pi Desktop on Windows or macOS. The protocol upgrade is triggered automatically when a user starts Pi Node through Pi Desktop.
What must self-managed Pi Linux node operators do?
Pi's instructions say Linux CLI users can run the pi-node update-protocol command when auto-update is disabled. Self-managed Docker users must update to the active Protocol 26.1 image and follow the project instructions.
Has Pi Network started Protocol 27?
No. Pi's upgrade document labels the 26.1-to-27.0 step as not active and lists its deadline, Docker release and notes as to be determined.
