Tether reported $1.5 billion in third-quarter net operating profit on October 30 and said its reserve buffer nearly doubled to $7.95 billion, strengthening the disclosed cushion behind USDT as crypto markets weakened.
The stablecoin issuer released figures covering September 30, alongside a BDO assurance report. The announcement combines an earnings measure with a balance-sheet snapshot: profit describes performance over a period, while excess reserves measure assets remaining after liabilities at one date.
Bitcoin closed October 29 at $77,780.33, down 4.27%, after trading between $77,699 and $81,999, according to ChartExchange’s historical data. Those completed-session figures provide market context, rather than a reaction to Tether’s later announcement.

BTCTether’s Q3 profit holds steady as USDT buffer grows
In its October 30 announcement, Tether said Treasury bills and reverse repurchase agreements supplied most operating income. Nine-month operating profit reached $4.5 billion, while issuance remained broadly steady around $184 billion.
Chief Executive Paolo Ardoino said the company’s reserve strategy was intended to support dependable redemptions under pressure. The company disclosed $132.4 billion in direct and indirect U.S. Treasury bill holdings.
The comparison with June is substantial. Tether’s July 31 release put assets at $187.75 billion and liabilities at $183.64 billion, leaving $4.11 billion. Q2 operating profit was also $1.5 billion, so the latest quarterly earnings pace did not accelerate.
That earlier release described reserves tested by volatility in gold and Bitcoin. It also reported a $2.38 billion reduction in secured lending and an addition of 14 tons of physical gold. Those were June-period developments, rather than new actions announced in October.
The latest surplus is about 94% higher than June’s, calculated from the two reported balances. A near-doubling of that cushion does not mean the company doubled its business, token supply or quarterly profit.
The balance-sheet arithmetic shows the change more clearly: reported assets increased by about $3.70 billion between June and September, while liabilities declined by about $145 million. Both movements widened the surplus. Those calculations describe the difference between two snapshots; they do not identify the transactions or investment returns responsible for every dollar of the increase.
USDT reserves exceed liabilities by roughly 4.34%
The September reserve report records $191.451 billion in assets against $183.496 billion in liabilities. That implies about $104.34 in assets for each $100 of liabilities, calculated by Daily Crypto Briefs, versus about $102.24 in June.
The larger margin gives more room for asset-value declines before assets fall below reported obligations. It does not establish how quickly every investment could be converted into dollars during simultaneous redemptions.
Gold and Bitcoin were valued at $19.08 billion and $8.37 billion, respectively. Together they represented about 14.3% of assets, a calculated share that illustrates why reserve composition deserves attention alongside the headline total.
A buffer and a cash account answer different questions. The first measures excess asset value; the second concerns immediately available funds. Treating the whole surplus as idle cash would obscure that distinction.
Stablecoin earnings also depend on expenses and distribution arrangements. Daily Crypto Briefs previously examined Circle’s USDC distribution costs and redemption terms. That comparison illustrates why reserve-income headlines alone cannot establish which issuer retains more profit on an equivalent basis.
BDO’s September snapshot differs from Tether’s annual audit
BDO’s reasonable-assurance conclusion covers September 30 only and excludes assurance on other dates. The report also separates management’s supplementary notes from the information within its assurance scope. Consequently, publication on October 30 does not turn the September balances into current balances.
That is separate from Tether’s August announcement of a completed KPMG U.S. audit of its 2025 financial statements. Tether said KPMG issued an unqualified opinion covering that year’s financial position, operations and cash flows under U.S. accounting rules.
As the earlier coverage of Tether’s annual audit explained, the two reporting exercises address different periods and scopes. Neither the annual opinion nor the quarterly snapshot should be described as continuous verification of all subsequent transactions.
Tether said the annual audit examined systems, ownership records, valuations and counterparties alongside the financial statements. Its completion adds historical context to the reporting process, while the September figures address a more recent reserve date. Keeping those dates attached to the respective findings avoids implying that one engagement automatically extends the other’s conclusions.
The September report’s equity reconciliation shows a $1.66 billion nine-month financial result, a different measure from the announcement’s operating profit. The headline earnings figure therefore should not be substituted for every other measure of performance.
Broader sentiment remained weak. Alternative.me’s index showed 30, or Fear, on October 30, compared with 51 a day earlier. It measures market sentiment, rather than Tether’s solvency or USDT redemption capacity.
Fear & Greed Index
Oct. 30, 2026The next reserve disclosure will show whether the larger cushion persisted beyond September. The announcement did not provide a current-quarter profit forecast or a date for the next release; subsequent asset values, liabilities and redemption activity remain the figures to watch.
