Uber Uses Canton to Earn 1.5 Extra Days of Cash Yield

TL;DR

  • Uber tested weekend investment liquidity using HSBC deposits and a Franklin Templeton fund on Canton.
  • Bloomberg's reported 1.5 extra days of yield describes longer investment time, not a 1.5% return.
  • The investment size, dollar earnings and net benefit after costs were not disclosed.

NEW YORK, October 30, 2026

Uber tested a Canton blockchain investment workflow that reportedly captured 1.5 extra days of yield on corporate cash, as banks and asset managers seek to extend treasury operations beyond weekday market hours.

HSBC, Franklin Templeton, Tradeweb and Fireblocks announced the pilot on October 30. Uber used tokenized deposits to purchase money market fund shares, connecting a bank balance with an investment that could be liquidated over a weekend.

The test arrived against a weaker crypto backdrop. Bitcoin closed October 29 at $77,780.33, down 4.27%, after reaching a session high of $81,999, according to ChartExchange’s historical series. Those completed UTC-session figures provide context, not evidence of a price response to the pilot.

Uber’s Canton pilot extends weekend investment time

In the joint announcement published by Tradeweb, Uber treasury executive Odette Rodrigues described the test as an initial step toward managing working capital around the clock. The companies said the workflow synchronized the cash and fund transfers, with proceeds restricted to verified corporate bank accounts.

Benzinga’s account of Bloomberg’s reporting supplies the timing: Uber bought on a Thursday and sold on Sunday, gaining about 1.5 days of investment income compared with exiting before the weekend. The specific calendar dates, investment amount and additional dollar earnings were not disclosed in that coverage.

The benefit is additional time invested. It does not establish a 1.5% return, a higher annual interest rate or a measurable improvement in Uber’s companywide earnings. Without the principal, applicable rate and costs, the financial gain cannot be calculated.

For a treasury department, timing changes the decision about when to sell. Cash needed outside market hours can otherwise require an earlier exit from an investment. Keeping funds invested closer to a payment deadline could reduce that idle interval, provided the exit route remains available.

That condition separates a useful demonstration from a complete operating model. A single successful transaction does not show how the arrangement performs during simultaneous withdrawals, a network interruption or an unexpected demand for cash. Repeat activity and disclosed terms would help answer those questions.

HSBC tokenized deposits remain bank claims

HSBC’s U.S. product guide describes tokens as digital records of underlying deposits. Onboarded organizations convert designated balances into blockchain-wallet tokens, with one token corresponding to one dollar in the relevant dollar service.

The guide lists five supported currencies across participating locations: euros, sterling, Hong Kong dollars, Singapore dollars and U.S. dollars. It describes a private HSBC blockchain and directs clients to a relationship manager for local availability. That general service description does not establish unrestricted access to the separate Canton investment workflow.

A tokenized deposit is a claim on a commercial bank. A money market fund share is an investment. Moving between the two changes the instrument held, even if a common interface makes the transfer look like a simple balance adjustment.

The bank launched its U.S. deposit service on April 13, following availability in Hong Kong, Singapore, Luxembourg and the UK. Eligibility remained subject to approvals, documentation and onboarding. October’s pilot adds a named corporate investment use case to that earlier deposit-transfer capability.

It also follows HSBC’s separate UAE deposit pilot with Ant. Transferring deposits between business entities and selling an investment to obtain payment cash solve related treasury problems, but evidence of one does not establish the scale or availability of the other.

Tokenized fund access leaves return and liquidity questions

Franklin Templeton’s money market fund disclosures warn that fund investments can lose money and are not FDIC-insured bank accounts. A fund seeking a stable $1 share value cannot guarantee it. The manager also identifies interest rates and changes in underlying credit ratings as influences on yield.

Those distinctions remain relevant when shares are recorded or transferred through blockchain infrastructure. Faster settlement changes the movement of an asset; it does not independently improve the credit quality of its holdings or guarantee an exit price.

Costs also affect the outcome. Additional investment income must be assessed against fund expenses, dealing charges and the cost of the supporting service. The disclosed 1.5-day timing improvement alone cannot establish a net saving, especially without the transaction size.

The same network previously featured in Visa’s private stablecoin-settlement test. That payment experiment and Uber’s investment transaction illustrate separate applications. Neither establishes that retail users can access the corporate workflow or earn its returns by holding a network token.

Broader sentiment remained cautious: Alternative.me’s Bitcoin-focused Fear & Greed Index read 30, or Fear, on October 30, versus 51 the previous day. The reading measures crypto sentiment rather than demand for corporate treasury services.

The next evidence to watch is repeat corporate usage, transaction volumes, eligibility terms and disclosed costs. Until those emerge, the demonstrated gain concerns investment timing; its dollar value and wider commercial reach remain unquantified.
