NEW YORK, Oct. 28, 2026
BNY added XRP and Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin to its institutional custody platform on October 27, expanding bank access to digital assets as XRP ended the day up 1.73%.
Eligible institutions can hold and transfer the tokens through the bank, extending its relationship with Ripple.
XRP closed the completed October 27 UTC session at $1.3295, after trading between $1.2888 and $1.3345, according to ChartExchange’s historical data. It remained about 12.3% below its September 27 close. The daily gain does not establish that the custody announcement caused the move.
Ripple President Monica Long framed the expanded collaboration as a step from holding digital assets toward using them for payments and collateral.

XRPBNY custody expands beyond RLUSD reserves
The relationship began with a different task. Ripple’s July 2025 appointment of BNY concerned primary custody of the reserves backing RLUSD, alongside transaction banking services supporting Ripple’s operations.
Reserve custody safeguards the assets behind a stablecoin. Client-token custody safeguards the stablecoins or other digital assets an investor owns. Combining both services at one provider does not make them the same pool of money or the same contractual relationship.
Ripple originally described RLUSD as an enterprise-focused dollar token backed one for one by high-quality liquid assets, with segregated reserves and redemption rights. Holding XRP is different: XRP is the ledger’s native asset, rather than a claim on RLUSD’s dollar reserve portfolio.
That distinction also underpinned Standard Chartered’s earlier RLUSD custody rollout in Dubai. An institution’s ability to safeguard client tokens should be assessed separately from its role in managing an issuer’s backing assets.
Ripple’s transparency page identifies Standard Custody as RLUSD’s issuer, supervised by New York’s financial regulator. It describes dollar and cash-equivalent reserves held in segregated accounts and monthly independent accounting attestations.
The page’s October 22 snapshot listed $2.3828 billion of circulating RLUSD and $2.5280 billion of reserve funds. Those dated issuer balances are distinct from the roughly $2.5 billion market capitalization cited in the October 27 partnership release. Neither figure measures clients’ deposits on BNY’s platform.
Institutional XRP custody still carries asset risk
BNY’s custody service description emphasizes segregated wallets, operational oversight and integration with settlement, accounting and servicing. That model addresses how an institution administers holdings alongside its existing assets.
The bank also states that digital assets are not FDIC insured, are not deposits and may lose value. A regulated custodian’s involvement therefore does not convert XRP into an insured bank balance or remove a stablecoin’s issuer and redemption risks.
The practical distinction involves transaction authority. XRP Ledger documentation explains that an account includes an address, an XRP balance and transaction history, while sending transactions requires associated cryptographic keys.
The network supports several authorization methods, including a master key, a replaceable regular key and multiple signers. Those are general ledger capabilities, rather than a disclosure of BNY’s particular XRP wallet configuration.
For an institution, custody arrangements determine who can authorize movements and how that authority fits internal controls. They do not establish that a client has bought additional tokens, generated trading volume or committed assets to a lending product.
BNY’s earlier collaboration with Galaxy on institutional staking addressed another service layer. Safekeeping, staking and using assets as collateral involve different instructions and risks; one announcement should not be treated as evidence that all three are available for every supported asset.
RLUSD minting and trade finance remain separate steps
BNY and Ripple plan direct RLUSD minting and redemption through the bank, subject to final internal and regulatory approvals. They are also exploring supply-chain finance with C2FO. Custody support does not establish that either initiative is operating.
C2FO’s separate October 27 announcement describes an Instant Pay initiative using RLUSD for settlement on the XRP Ledger. It targets the delay between financing an approved invoice and delivering usable money to a supplier.
Under the described model, participating capital providers fund early payments while invoice terms and due dates remain unchanged. C2FO’s page directs interested businesses to a waitlist. That is a concrete access constraint, rather than evidence of a generally available BNY financing service.
Faster blockchain settlement can shorten the transfer leg without eliminating the need to approve invoices, assess counterparties or arrange financing. The proposed workflow still depends on commercial claims and participating providers outside the ledger itself.
Broader crypto sentiment was neutral: Alternative.me’s index read 51 on October 28, versus 48 a day earlier. The indicator describes market mood, not bank custody demand or credit quality.
Fear & Greed Index
Oct. 28, 2026The next checkpoints are final approvals for direct minting and redemption, disclosed client access terms and evidence of completed trade-finance transactions. The custody announcement supplied no client-asset total or timetable for those planned services.
