TL;DR

  • Tether said its gold-backed XAUT token received a Shariah compliance certification from Amanah Advisors on July 27.
  • Tether says each XAUT represents ownership of one troy fine ounce of physical gold held in Swiss vaults, rather than a leveraged or synthetic gold position.
  • The company says the certification could support use by Islamic banks, halal savings products and tokenized trade-finance or collateral programs, but it did not announce a bank launch or new distribution agreement.

CASABLANCA, July 28, 2026

Tether said its gold-backed XAUT token has received a Shariah compliance certification from Amanah Advisors, a step the company says could widen the product’s use by Islamic banks, institutions and individuals seeking digital exposure to physical gold.

The July 27 announcement does not itself launch XAUT at a bank or create a new trading venue. It certifies the product’s stated structure: Tether says each token represents ownership of one troy fine ounce of physical gold held in Swiss vaults, with no leverage, interest-based mechanism or speculative derivative embedded in the token.

That distinction matters because XAUT is not a dollar stablecoin. Its price follows gold, and it closed near $4,060 on July 27, according to CoinGecko’s historical data, with a reported market capitalization of about $2.51 billion. The token was about 0.6% higher over the month ending July 27, after moving between roughly $3,986 and $4,170 in the period.

Tether’s certification announcement named Amanah Advisors and said the review covered real ownership of physical gold, clear and verifiable backing, absence of riba, no leverage or speculative derivatives, and reserve transparency. Amanah describes its own review and fatwa service as an assessment of proposed products for Shariah non-compliance risk.

Tether Gold’s Certification Opens a Distribution Route

For Tether, the certification is a distribution and product-positioning move, not evidence that new demand has already arrived. The company said it sees possible use in Islamic-bank digital-gold offerings, takaful and halal savings products, long-term wealth preservation, tokenized trade finance and collateral applications.

Those are potential use cases rather than announced integrations. Tether did not disclose a list of participating banks, a country-by-country rollout, fees, or a volume target. Readers should also separate a Shariah review of the token structure from local regulatory authorization: a product can be certified but still need approvals, licensing and a local distribution partner before it reaches retail customers.

The timing gives the announcement a more concrete backdrop. Tether said on July 20 that XAUT had been recognized as an accepted spot commodity in Abu Dhabi Global Market, subject to each firm’s permissions and approval. A week later, the Shariah certification gives Tether a second institutional framing for a product built around bullion rather than a dollar peg.

It also extends a theme already visible in crypto lending. Daily Crypto Briefs reported in June that Ledn added support for XAUT and was preparing gold-backed loans. The certification does not alter Ledn’s still-pending loan terms, but it could matter to firms evaluating whether tokenized gold fits their product and compliance frameworks.

One Ounce of Gold Sits Behind Each XAUT Claim

Tether’s description of the backing is unusually important here. The company says one full XAUT represents ownership of one troy fine ounce on a London Good Delivery bar; the bars are identifiable by serial number, purity and weight, and the product is redeemable under Tether’s terms. That makes the asset a tokenized commodity claim, not an algorithmic or synthetic price tracker.

The latest Tether Gold reserve report, dated March 31 and published April 30, said the custodian held 707,747.139 fine troy ounces while 707,747.090000 XAUT were in circulation. The report put the market value of circulating tokens at about $3.30 billion at the reporting-date gold price. It is a dated attestation, not a real-time audit or a guarantee of secondary-market liquidity.

That product design is why the certification language focused on ownership and asset backing. But it does not remove issuer, custody, redemption, market-price, smart-contract, counterparty or jurisdictional risks. XAUT can rise or fall with gold, and a holder may face different redemption access or costs from a trader using a liquid exchange pair.

Tether has also simplified its wider gold-product lineup. Its decision to wind down Alloy and aUSDT, covered in our report on the aUSDT shutdown, left XAUT as the clearer direct tokenized-gold offering. The new certification adds a compliance label to that simpler structure; it does not change the underlying exposure from gold into cash.

Islamic Finance Demand Will Depend on Bank Access

The commercial test now is whether institutions turn certification into accessible products. Islamic banks and savings providers would still need custody, transfer controls, local compliance, gold redemption arrangements and a way to explain price risk to customers. Trade-finance or collateral users would need standards for valuation, liquidation and claims over the underlying gold.

The broader market backdrop is cautious. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index registered 30, or Fear, on July 27. That reading describes general crypto sentiment, not demand for gold-backed tokens, but it helps explain why an asset tied to physical bullion may draw attention when risk appetite is subdued.

For readers, the next useful signals are specific: an Islamic-bank launch, a jurisdictional approval, new XAUT redemption or custody partners, and updated reserve disclosures. The certification establishes a product claim; adoption will depend on whether those operational pieces follow.
